ANIMAL GUARDIAN VOLUNTEER DAY

June 11th is ANIMAL GUARDIAN VOLUNTEER DAY and was conceptualized by the US-based group In Defense of Animals (IDA) We wanted to come up with a local way of celebrating volunteerism at PARC but we have been swamped with rescue calls and meetings. We are simply pasting a primer on Animal Guardian Volunteer Day disseminated by IDA to just give you ideas on how each of us here (yup, even in the Philippines) can celebrate the occasion all year round! And hey, maybe some of you can help us plan a group celebration at PARC next year?

IDA created Animal Guardian Volunteer Day to give Animal Guardians around the country a day to turn their compassion for animals into action by volunteering to help animals. By organizing a volunteer project to help the animals in your community or around the world you can make the world a better place for animals and give something back to those animals who have enriched your own life. Animal Guardian Volunteer Day is the perfect opportunity to get involved and make a difference for animals now and in the future. Join IDA members from around the country on June 11th as they volunteer in their communities to benefit animals. Your volunteer efforts today can create a more compassionate world for animals tomorrow. To get started, choose your volunteer project, contact the animal charity of your choice to coordinate your efforts with their needs and schedule, recruit other volunteers through flyers and web postings, and hold a meeting to plan your project. Your volunteerism can take many forms, from caring for an elderly or sick neighbor's companion animal to hosting a fundraiser for a local charity. More ideas are listed below.

Suggested Ways to Volunteer for Animals on Animal Guardian Volunteer Day:
-Present a humane education program to a children's club or classroom. (join our humane education group if you love storytelling and kids)
-Coordinate a volunteer project for your local animal shelter or sanctuary. (good for schools, churches or other groups)
-Work with environmental groups to preserve animal habitats. See www.earthsave.org for ideas.
-Go vegetarian-or better yet vegan-and save the lives of animals every day through your choices in food, clothing and consumer products. Order a free Vegetarian Starter Kit at www.farmusa.org .
-Armchair Activism works - send letters and petitions on behalf of animals via e-mail.
-Be a friend to wildlife by cleaning up a local park or beach or planting trees.
-Enhance the life of Feral Cats by implementing a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program in your community.
-"Adopt" an animal from a sanctuary or shelter with a donation that will help pay for their lifelong care.

E-mail philpaws@yahoo.com or call 02-475-1688 for assistance in arrangements in your area, information also available at www.paws.org.ph Many of the issues we battle with concerning animals in our society are the same ones we battle as human beings. Our programs are changing the future of the Philippines, one mind at a time. Please join us.
