BRITISH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YOUNG FILIPINOS

BRITISH CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS

NOW OPEN FOR YOUNG FILIPINOS

The British Embassy in Manila is inviting young Filipinos to apply to the 2006/7 British Chevening Scholarship Programme. Funded by the British Government through its Embassies, Chevening Scholarship Awards enable future Filipino leaders and opinion-formers to study in the United Kingdom. About 3,000 overseas students receive awards under the Chevening Programme each year to study at a UK-educational institution, usually at Masters level. In the process, scholars not only learn more about the UK but also gain valuable knowledge and skills that benefit their countries.

Prominent Filipino Chevening scholars include Education Undersecretary Jose Luis Martin "Chito" Gascon, Finance Undersecretary Emmanuel "Noel" Bonoan, Newsbreak Editors Marites Dañguilan Vitug and Glenda Gloria, and Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism Executive Director Shiela Coronel. Many
other Chevening alumni all over the world have risen to prominent positions in government, business, development and other sectors.

Awards are normally made for formal courses such as a Master's degree but are occasionally given for short certificate courses lasting between 3 to 6 months. The awards are not normally granted for courses of more than one year.

The British Embassy and the British Council encourages eligible candidates to submit applications in good time for the 2006/7 selection process. Applications must be received by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 29 July 2005. For application instructions, eligibility requirements and other information on the British Chevening Scholarships, please visit
